As an entrepreneur, Stu founded 3 independent game companies in the Seattle area over the past 25 years. He is currently Studio Head and Creative Director at Pine Street Codeworks LLC where he creates innovative video games that bring the beauty of math and nature to players around the world. His latest game, Tiny Bubbles, has been awarded over 16 industry awards for its design, including Best iOS Game of 2018 and Best Mobile Game.
Combining his many interests, Stu began programming games in his middle-school math class. He fell in love with making software that blends science, engineering, art and sound to create compelling and accessible user experiences. As a son of anthropologists, he grew up with an appreciation for cultural differences and a mindset of inclusion.
After graduating from the University of Washington (B.S.E. Computer Engineering with honors), Stu co-founded Surreal Software, where he helped grow his game studio to over 120 employees. He developed games for Sony, Activision, Microsoft and Universal Studios. He went on to become interim CTO for Midway Games and then Executive Technical Director at Warner Brothers.
Stu designed biology and math educational games for Amplify Learning before founding Pine Street Codeworks with his wife Paulette in 2015. They live with their two boys in Mercer Island, WA. Together with his family, Stu enjoys board games, tennis, hiking, fractals, gardening, robotics, 3D printing and origami.
