Land Acknowledgment
The Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) acknowledges and honors the Coast Salish peoples of this land on which we live, work and play.
We are on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
This land touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations, who have dwelled herein since time immemorial.
We see you, respect your right to self-governance and self-determination, and are committed to being better listeners, learners, and in highlighting indigenous voices.
Along with many other parts of indigenous cultures, much history was lost through the colonization of the hemisphere and the interruptions to oral histories.
We know that math was an integral part of their lives, and lives on through their art, artifacts, and culture, for example in the form of patterns and use of geometry.
We look forward to continuing to learn from and with indigenous cultures, to focus on exploring and sharing indigenous math as part of our future museum work.
