Math in… Egg Decoration

Egg decoration has been practiced by many different cultures. The earliest known decorated eggs were found in South Africa, estimated to be 60,000 years old.

Being symbols of new life played a big role, but their distinctive shape couldn’t have hurt! Decorators often use the axis of rotational symmetry of an egg’s ovoid shape to create beautiful symmetric designs.

Can you see how this rotational symmetry might be used in decorating?
