Math in… Henna

Henna is a plant-based dye that has been used for thousands of years to color hair and create body art.

Many people use henna to decorate their bodies when celebrating engagements, weddings, birthdays, religious holidays, and other special occasions.

In Hindu and Muslim cultures, the days before a wedding often include a mehndi party, where the bride’s hands and feet are ornately decorated.

Many decorations feature symmetry or patterns that repeat in one or two dimensions.

What symmetries or patterns do you see?

What other symmetrical or patterned body art have you seen?
