Regardless of which path you choose, all volunteers begin with a Volunteer Night - a 2-hour orientation at SUMM Place or Kent Station, held monthly.

Community volunteer
Flexible support
A welcoming entry point with no long-term commitment. Great for trying out volunteering or supporting SUMM from behind the scenes.

Program volunteer
Direct programming
For volunteers ready to work directly with youth in schools, libraries, and community events. Deeper commitment, deeper impact.

Want to become a Program Volunteer? Start with the Community Volunteer application first. Once you've completed onboarding, you can apply for Program Volunteer status through a supplemental application.

Common questions
What's the difference between the two applications?
The Community Volunteer application is shorter and designed for anyone who wants to get started with SUMM. The Program Volunteer application is more involved - it includes reference checks, a Sterling background check, and is for those ready to work directly with youth.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
Most events require volunteers to be 18 or older, but we welcome youth at some events. Ages 16-17 can apply with parent or guardian permission. Under 16? Email our volunteer coordinator before applying.
Can SUMM verify my volunteer hours?
Yes - we're happy to sign off on hours for service learning, employer matching, and similar programs. Contact our volunteer coordination team with your request.
What if I can't make a shift?
If you know more than 24 hours in advance, contact the Event Point of Contact or Volunteer Coordinator to update your schedule. If it's the day of, reach out to the event contact directly.
