Math Out Loud - Billiard Balls and Laser Beams

  • The Museum of Flight: View Lounge 9404 East Marginal Way South Seattle, WA, 98108 United States (map)

Join us for an engaging talk on reflective geometry by Dan Finkel. Imagine turning on a light in a room made entirely of mirrors. Certainly the entire room would light up... or could it be possible that parts of it remain in darkness? To find the answer, we'll need to explore the fascinating world of reflective geometry. Come take a tour on a fascinating realm in mathematics that connects solar power, ships set on fire, juggling, elliptical billiards, eavesdropping at a distance, chaos, and unsolved problems.

General admission tickets are free with a suggested donation of $25. Purchase a VIP ticket for $70 to get premium reserved seating and access to an exclusive social hour after the talk with our speaker over food and drink.

Dan Finkel is Founder of Math for Love (mathforlove.com), a Seattle-based organization devoted to transforming how math is taught and learned. He is an educator, game creator, curriculum writer, puzzle author, and math evangelist whose work has been featured by the New York Times, TED-Ed, and many more; he gives talks nationally and internationally, and his TED Talk - 5 Principles of Extraordinary Math Teaching - has been viewed over a million times.

This event is presented as a part of Math Out Loud, SUMM's new public lecture series designed to bring engaging mathematical ideas to life.
