Meet Adrian Young

Group of five young people smiling and posing together indoors, with one person in the center having his arm around others, in front of a whiteboard.

Adrian was a high school mathematics teacher at Miramar High School in Miramar, FL.

Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Adrian came to the USA at the age of twenty, to study mathematics and pursue his dream of becoming a teacher who makes mathematics fun to learn. He achieved his dream and became the youngest mathematics teacher at Miramar High School, where he taught for his entire career.

Sadly, Adrian died from cancer when he was only 40 years old.

Adrian’s mother, Vel McKen, established the Adrian Young Mathematics Education Fund in honor of her son to support the youth within communities of opportunity to experience SUMM’s fun math engagement outreach programs without barriers.

Vel believes Adrian would love Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) because he was such an excellent teacher and mentor.  He believed in sharing his love for mathematics and formed a math club that participated in math competitions. He believed that with the right guidance, everyone can be taught to love and excel at mathematics!
