Math in… Braiding

Mathematicians study braid groups, which are special collections of interlaced strands. They study how to determine the “equivalence” between two braids, how to transform one into the other by moving around the strands, and many other properties of braids. Braid theory not only has applications in other areas of mathematics, but also other sciences such as fluid mechanics and quantum physics!
