Math in… City Planning

Even though roads have to be planned around lakes and hills, most cities still end up with orderly layouts!

Manhattan has a rectangular (or Cartesian) grid, especially around Central Park. Parallel streets cross parallel avenues at right angles.

Beijing has a more polar grid, with the palace at the center of concentric circular roads and radial roads heading out from the center.
